The Employment Rights Bill has failed to clear the final stage of its passing through Parliament. The House of Lords chose to insist on a number of amendments that the Commons had rejected meaning that we are now in a state of ‘parliamentary ping-pong’.
One of the biggest issues concerns the amendment relates to the unfair dismissal qualifying period. The Government’s manifesto promise was to remove this completely but the Lords have insisted on a six-month qualifying period, rather than allowing unfair dismissal to be a day-one right.
