Single Employment Tribunal Claims on the Increase

Our team of specialists are ready to help your business today

The Employment Tribunal Statistics for April-June 2019 have been released showing an overall increase of 14% in single claims to 9,700 being received by the Tribunal service as compared to the previous year. This increase is likely to be attributable to the abolition of Employment Tribunal fees in 2017. Since fees have been abolished, single claims have been steadily increasing quarter on quarter, only falling slightly in quarter one of 2018/2019.
Other headline points include:

  • Although single claims have increase, multiple claims were down by 57% on the same period last year to 19,000. Multiple claims are generally more volatile than single claims as they can be skewed by a high number of claims against a single employer.
  • The mean age of single claims at disposal was 33 weeks, which was 5 weeks more than the same time last year.
  • Disability discrimination claims received the largest average award of all types of discrimination claims (£28,000)
  • The most common jurisdictional complaint was unlawful deductions from wages.
  • Between 1 April 2019 and 30 June 2019, 140 Employment Tribunal refund applications were received (down from 180 in Q4 2018/19) and 310 refund payments were made with a total value of £265,00. (Since the launch of the refund scheme in October 2017 up to 30 June 2019, there have been 22,100 applications for refunds received and 22,000 refund payment made, totalling £17.6 million).
